Downtown Delaware will take on an experimental edge on Friday, May 1, as First Friday transforms into an interactive celebration of creativity, discovery, and American ingenuity.
From 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Sandusky Street will host a series of hands-on STEAM experiences designed to engage visitors of all ages. The event is part of the statewide COSI Science Festival and aligns with the broader America 250 initiative, highlighting the role of innovation in the nation’s history.
A Street-Level Science Experience
Instead of simply observing, attendees will move from station to station, participating directly in experiments, creative challenges, and interactive demonstrations. The focus is on making science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics accessible, engaging, and visible in real time. Each stop along Sandusky Street will offer a different lens on innovation, encouraging curiosity and exploration in a setting that blends education with the energy of a downtown festival evening.
Designed for Families and Curious Minds
The event is structured to appeal to a wide audience. Families, students, and anyone with an interest in how things work will find opportunities to experiment, build, and create.
A key highlight will be the distribution of COSI Learning Lunchboxes at the Bookmobile. The first 400 children in attendance, accompanied by an adult, will receive these hands-on kits, reinforcing the evening’s emphasis on learning through doing.
A Community Collaboration
The program brings together several local organizations, including the Delaware County District Library, Main Street Delaware, Delaware Area Career Center, and the Friends of the Library. Together, they are positioning this First Friday as more than an event. It is a shared community effort to connect education, creativity, and public space in a way that feels immediate and accessible.
What STEAM Means in Practice
For those new to the concept, STEAM expands on STEM by adding the arts into the equation. That addition shifts the focus from technical understanding alone to creative application. In practice, that can mean anything from engineering challenges and scientific experiments to design-based activities, visual arts, and storytelling. The result is a more holistic approach to learning, one that reflects how innovation actually happens.
A Different Kind of First Friday
This edition of First Friday reframes downtown as a place of discovery. It invites participants not just to attend, but to engage. And by combining the familiar rhythm of a community gathering with hands-on exploration, the evening offers a reminder that innovation is not confined to laboratories or classrooms. It can unfold on a city street, one experiment at a time.
