The Olentangy Liberty High School Marching Band (OLHSMB) is preparing to make history once again as they head to London, England, for the prestigious London New Year’s Day Parade (LNYDP). This marks the band’s third trip to the iconic event, a remarkable achievement that highlights their reputation for excellence and dedication to musical artistry.
Having previously performed at LNYDP in 2013 and 2017, and virtually in 2021, OLHSMB is no stranger to the grandeur of this international stage. The band’s participation this year solidifies their place among the world’s elite marching ensembles.
A Legacy of Excellence
OLHSMB has long been a powerhouse in the world of high school marching bands. Competing in nearly every Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) State Finals since its inception, the band consistently earns Superior ratings. Highlights of their storied history include:
- Being the only Ohio band nominated for the 2005 National Independence Day Parade in Washington, D.C.
- Memorable performances at the Outback Bowl Parade and Halftime Show as well as Walt Disney World’s Spectromagic Parade and Festival of Fantasy Parade in 2002.
- Current champions in the Ohio Indoor Performance Association (OIPA) Open Class, with many members excelling in OIPA and Winter Guard International (WGI) competitions.
Additionally, many OLHSMB alumni have gone on to join Drum Corps International (DCI) and collegiate bands, including performances in London’s celebrated parades.
Leadership That Inspires
At the helm of OLHSMB is Travis Hicks, the school’s Director of Bands since it opened in 2003. An honors graduate of Ohio Northern University with degrees in Music Education and Music Composition, Mr. Hicks has guided the band to numerous state and national accolades. Under his leadership, OLHSMB flourishes across multiple performance ensembles, including the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Winterline programs.
Mr. Hicks’ contributions extend beyond the marching field. As a board member of the OIPA and a respected percussionist and drill designer, his impact on music education resonates both locally and nationally. His wife, Jennifer Hicks, serves as an Assistant Director for the band, adding to the team’s dedication to student success.
Ready to Dazzle the World
As they prepare for their trip, the band members are excited to represent Ohio and the United States on an international stage. The LNYDP, known for its vibrant celebration of music and culture, will feature bands from across the globe, including:
- Western Kentucky University Big Red Marching Band, celebrating their 100th anniversary.
- Foothill High School Marching Band & Color Guard, returning to London to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
- The Normal Marching Band from Illinois, known for their rapid rise to prominence since their establishment in 2018.
OLHSMB will march along a route that includes some of London’s most iconic landmarks: Piccadilly, Regent Street St James’s, Pall Mall, Trafalgar Square, and Whitehall. Their participation adds another jewel to their crown of achievements and demonstrates the dedication of their students, directors, and the supportive community that uplifts them.
