In an innovative initiative, the Connections Volunteer Center is offering a program titled “Sages & Seekers,” aiming to bridge the generational gap. This eight-week program, hosted at Delaware Hayes High School, brings together older adults and high school students for a unique exchange of experiences and perspectives.
The core concept of the program is simple yet profound. Older participants, aptly named “Sages,” are paired with high school students, referred to as “Seekers.” This pairing is not just about mentorship but a reciprocal exchange of life experiences and wisdom. It’s an opportunity for Sages to share their life stories, imparting their knowledge and experiences, while Seekers gain insights and learn to appreciate different life stages.
The transformative impact of this program is evident in the testimonials from previous participants. Previous seekers have commented on how their interaction with a Sage positively influenced their self-perception. Conversely, a Sage from the same session highlighted the joy and fulfillment derived from assisting and guiding the Seekers. Another Seeker from Spring 2023 expressed similar sentiments, underlining the program’s effectiveness in fostering personal growth and understanding.
The Sages & Seekers program requires a commitment of one hour per week over eight weeks, starting from January 24, 2024, to March 13, 2024. Meetings are scheduled every Wednesday from 12:15 PM to 1:15 PM at Delaware Hayes High School. For those interested in participating or seeking more information, Elaine Miller can be contacted at [email protected] or by phone at 740.363.5000 ext 304. It’s important to note that volunteer Sages must undergo a BCI background check, funded through SourcePoint grant money.
The benefits of this intergenerational program extend beyond the individuals involved. For Sages, it’s an opportunity to reflect on their life events, share their accumulated wisdom, and feel a renewed sense of purpose. The Seekers, on the other hand, acquire valuable life skills like empathy, listening, interviewing, writing, and public speaking. The program culminates in a special tribute, where each Seeker presents a written homage to their Sage, symbolizing the respect and gratitude fostered through their interactions.
