Starting this week, the Delaware County Genealogical Society is offering a golden opportunity for anyone interested in tracing their roots. Every Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, knowledgeable volunteers from the society will be available at the Delaware Main Library to assist patrons with their genealogical research.

The Delaware County Genealogical Society: Preserving Local History

The Delaware County Genealogical Society has a rich history of its own. Dedicated to preserving the unique heritage of Delaware County, Ohio, the society supports both individuals and groups in their quest to uncover family histories. Whether you’re new to genealogy or a seasoned researcher, the society offers valuable resources and expert guidance to help you navigate the sometimes complex world of family history.

Comprehensive Resources for Genealogical Research

At the heart of the Delaware County Genealogical Society’s mission is the collection, preservation, and dissemination of genealogical records, particularly those related to Delaware County. Among the resources available to researchers are:

  • Vital Records: Gain access to birth, marriage, and death records that can serve as the foundation for building your family tree.
  • County Histories: Explore historical documents and records that provide essential context and background for genealogical research.
  • Research Support: Receive personalized assistance from volunteers who can guide you through the process of uncovering your family’s history.

A Collaborative Effort

The society doesn’t work in isolation. It collaborates with other local historical societies and archives, making a wealth of genealogical data more accessible. This cooperative effort ensures that researchers have the most accurate and comprehensive information available. However, it’s important to verify dates and information with the relevant county or state government agencies, as historical records can sometimes present conflicting data.

For those eager to delve into Delaware County’s genealogical resources, a comprehensive guide is available here.

A Legacy of Genealogical Enthusiasm

The roots of the Delaware County Genealogical Society run deep. The idea for the society was sparked in September 1984 when Maxine Marshall, the Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS) representative, gathered a group of genealogy enthusiasts at the Delaware County District Library. The group’s enthusiasm led to the formation of a new genealogy club, which was officially recognized as a chapter of the OGS on May 18, 1985. This milestone is commemorated with a plaque displayed at the Delaware County Historical Society and Delaware County Genealogical Society (DCHS/DCGS) Research Library.

The society’s founding members, including trustees Laury Helton, Judith Freed, and W. Harold Nutt, were instrumental in establishing the chapter. The society began with 83 charter members and has since grown to become a vital resource for genealogical research in the area.

Ongoing Projects and Opportunities to Get Involved

Today, the Delaware County Genealogical Society continues to make strides in genealogical research and preservation. Volunteers are currently engaged in significant projects such as indexing and making available Delaware County Common Pleas and Probate records. These efforts are crucial for preserving the county’s legal history and providing researchers with more comprehensive data.

Volunteering with the society is highly encouraged, as is membership. The society also holds monthly program meetings from September through June, open to the public and usually held on the first Tuesday evening of the month. These meetings offer informative presentations on various genealogical topics, making them a must-attend for anyone interested in family history.

A Community Committed to Genealogy

The Delaware County Genealogical Society is more than just a resource; it’s a community of individuals passionate about uncovering the past and preserving it for future generations. Whether you’re just starting your genealogical journey or you’re looking to dive deeper into your family’s history, the society’s volunteers are here to help every Thursday at the Delaware Main Library.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to explore your roots and connect with the local history that shapes your family story. Visit the Delaware Main Library any Thursday and take the first step toward discovering your family’s legacy.
