The City of Westerville has shared a plea for help in maintaining the city’s natural habitats.

While strolling through Westerville’s scenic parks and trails, it can be tempting to take home a handful of wildflowers. But leaving them untouched is a simple act of stewardship. Native blooms provide vital food for pollinators like bees and butterflies—especially in spring—and many take years or even decades to flourish. Picking or digging up these plants can disrupt natural regeneration, reduce seed production, and rob others of the chance to enjoy them in their natural setting.

🌳 A Legacy of Stewardship: Westerville’s Green Commitment

Environmental care isn’t just encouraged in Westerville—it’s a core value. The City has woven sustainability into its daily operations, preserving natural habitats while ensuring residents and visitors can enjoy them for years to come. From wetlands to woodlots, Westerville’s preservation efforts protect wildlife habitats, improve water quality, and offer hands-on educational experiences.

📍 Green by the Numbers: Land, Water, and Opportunity

Westerville’s environmental footprint is expansive:

  • 166 acres of designated greenways
  • 42 acres of wetlands
  • 31 acres of open water
  • 60 newly acquired acres for future recreation and conservation

Additional properties with high preservation value are also on the city’s radar for potential acquisition, continuing the momentum.

🐸 Frogs, Flowers, and the Power of Programming

The Highlands Park Wetlands, restored with help from an Ohio EPA grant, now support:

  • 217 species of plants (up from 12)
  • 179 species of animals (up from 10)

The popular Frog Fridays program, created in partnership with an environmental education nonprofit, offers children and families an up-close look at amphibians and wetland ecology. More than 5,000 participants have hopped into the program over the past three years.

🏊 Building Green: Highlands Park Aquatic Center Sets the Standard

The redevelopment of Highlands Park Aquatic Center didn’t just make a splash—it set a new bar for eco-conscious design. Using recycled materials and managing stormwater naturally, the facility exemplifies how recreation and sustainability can go hand in hand.

🌲 Tree City USA: 43 Years and Counting

With nearly 2,000 new trees planted in just the past three years, Westerville is deepening its canopy and its commitment. Native species like milkweed and coneflower are common sights, planted to nourish pollinators and support local biodiversity. Green corridors, trail medians, and even urban developments are designed with nature in mind.

🚲 Eco on the Move: Trails, Recycling, and Energy Wins

Westerville’s environmental efforts stretch beyond trees and wetlands:

  • Utility vehicles maintain trails with minimal fuel use
  • Energy efficiency upgrades have slashed $50,000 from annual Community Center costs
  • Recycling has expanded with three times more receptacles now available across parks and paths

🌍 A Model for Tomorrow

From expanding green spaces to planting pollinator gardens and hosting frog-filled family nights, Westerville is showing what it means to lead with environmental integrity. Whether you’re enjoying a trail, learning about wetland wildlife, or simply walking by a patch of untouched wildflowers, you’re stepping into a community deeply rooted in sustainability.
