Ohio Wesleyan University has announced its December 2021 lineup of public events. Unless otherwise noted, admission is free.

Now through Dec. 13 – “From Our Collection: Covers for a Small Library,” featuring works by R.B. Kitaj, in Gallery 2001 inside Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Kitaj is described as a key figure in European and American contemporary painting whose “highly personal paintings and drawings reflect his deep interest in history; cultural, social and political ideologies; and issues of identity.” He died in 2007. Gallery 2001, located on the library’s first floor, is open during library hours, available at owu.edu/library. The gallery is a satellite of the Richard M. Ross Art Museum. Admission is free. 8:30 a.m. Dec. 2 – Delaware Does Entrepreneurship meeting, featuring three entrepreneurs sharing their business ideas with an audience of fellow entrepreneurs, Ohio Wesleyan students, potential investors, financial institutions, and business resource providers. The event will be held at the Delaware Entrepreneurial Center at Ohio Wesleyan University, 70 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. - 4:30-8 p.m. Dec. 3 – OWU art student exhibition, in the Werner Gallery inside Edgar Hall, 35 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The show will feature works purchased from OWU students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their work. The student works have been purchased with an endowment contributed by professor emeritus Marty Kalb. Admission is free, and facial coverings are required. - 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 – “We Barely Talk: A Festival of One-Acts,” with producer/directing mentor Brian Granger, on the Main Stage in Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware. - 7 p.m. Dec. 5 – OWU Music Collage Concert, featuring the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Park Avenue Jazz Ensemble, Choral Art Society, and Marching Bishops. - 6 p.m. Dec. 8 – Dance at the Ross, featuring OWU student-choreographers presenting three solo performances in response to new exhibitions at the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. 8 p.m. Dec. 3 and 10 –Friday night skywatches, at Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Content varies based on weather conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and stargazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. Dec. 7 through March 20, 2022 – “Deaf Republic” by James Stewart in the Lobby, Kuhlman, and Mayhew galleries and “Into the Light” by Ron Anderson in the West Gallery, at the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. Stewart’s paintings and ceramics interpret Ilya Kaminsky’s award-winning book of poetry “Deaf Republic,” in which a young deaf boy inspires a town’s resistance to military occupation (see listing below). Columbus-based Anderson’s figurative paintings bring African American stories of music, sport, and dance into the spotlight. During the academic year, the Ross is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will be closed Nov. 20-29 for Thanksgiving break; Dec. 17-Jan. 12, 2022, for winter break; and March 5-13 for spring break. 4:10 p.m. Dec. 7 – Ilya Kaminsky, poet and author of “Deaf Republic” and “Dancing In Odessa,” reads from his book “Deaf Republic,” in the Benes Rooms of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. In its review of “Deaf Republic,” Entertainment Weekly stated: “Kaminsky’s soulful new collection opens on an act of horrific violence before meditating on silence and deafness in times of political unrest. The language is exquisite; the ethical questions Kaminsky poses are provocative.” Kaminsky was born in Odessa, formerly the Soviet Union, and arrived in the United States with his family in 1993. “Deaf Republic” was recognized as The New York Times’ Notable Book for 2019 and as the best book of 2019 by outlets including The Washington Post, The Telegraph, Publishers Weekly, The Guardian, Irish Times, Vanity Fair, Lithub, and Library Journal. Artwork inspired by his book also is on display beginning Dec. 7 at OWU’s Richard M. Ross Art Museum (see listing above.) 7 p.m. Dec. 8 – “Sending Your Student to OWU,” an online panel discussion for parents and families currently involved in the college search. Ohio Wesleyan staff members from the Office of Student Engagement and Success and other areas across campus will answer questions. 8 p.m. Dec. 9 – New Vistas in Astronomy lecture featuring Don Terndrup, Ph.D., associate professor of astronomy at The Ohio State University, discussing “Our Little Home in the Vast Milky Way: What We Learn From the Nearest Stars.” Terndrup is an observational astronomer focused on the characterization of stars and stellar systems, with an emphasis on their abundances and rotation rates. Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 – OWU Women’s Basketball Bishop Classic/Hoops for Hope, in Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware.
