OWU is gearing up for a day of sports, community engagement, and family fun with its Bishop Backers Winter Community Day and Delaware Expo 2024.

Scheduled for February 17, starting at noon, this event promises to bring together a vibrant mix of activities for all ages, emphasizing community spirit and local engagement. The day’s festivities will be held at Gordon Field House, located at 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware, and will continue until 3:00 PM.

The highlight of the day is a basketball doubleheader featuring the OWU women’s and men’s teams. The women’s game kicks off at 1:00 PM against Wittenberg University Tigers, followed by the men’s game at 3:00 PM against the Yeomen of Oberlin College. Both teams will celebrate their seniors, adding a layer of excitement and nostalgia to the matches. The games are set to take place in the adjacent Branch Rickey Arena.

Simultaneously, the expo will showcase area nonprofit organizations and businesses. It’s a unique opportunity for community members to interact with local entities, learn about their services, and engage in various activities.

Children’s activities will be in full swing, thanks to the Delaware Community Center YMCA and Delaware Fire Department. These activities are not just fun but also educational, providing a wholesome experience for the younger attendees. Additionally, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will make a special appearance between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM, introducing their animal ambassadors, which is sure to delight animal lovers of all ages.

In a heartwarming gesture, the Humane Society of Delaware County will offer a chance to pet and adopt dogs. This initiative not only provides joy to attendees but also aids in finding loving homes for animals in need.

The event also serves as an educational platform, with Delaware EMTs offering an opportunity to learn about CPR – a critical skill that can save lives. Moreover, attendees can participate in a free raffle drawing, with a big-screen television as the grand prize.

In the spirit of community support, admission to all activities is complimentary with a canned food donation, benefiting the Delaware County Hunger Alliance. This gesture underlines the event’s commitment to addressing local needs and fostering a sense of collective responsibility.

Parking for the event is free, available in all OWU campus lots. This convenience ensures easy access for all attendees. Furthermore, for those interested in being more than just spectators, information on registering for an expo exhibitor’s table is available at owu.edu/BishopBackers.
