Olentangy Schools has announced plans to open Elementary School 17 in the fall of 2024. The new school will be situated in Delaware County and Berlin Township, specifically along Peachblow Road. The location is strategically placed between the railroad tracks and the intersection with Piatt Road, and extends south of the intersection along Piatt Road. This development marks a significant step in the district’s ongoing efforts to provide quality education to a growing community.

Community Involvement in School Naming

The district is inviting community members to actively participate in naming the new elementary school. The Board of Education, responsible for naming school buildings and district facilities, will follow its policy 7250, known as “Commemoration of School Facilities.” According to this policy, the names of school buildings should be based on local history or geography and should not include directional names like north, south, east, or west.

The district has opened the floor for name suggestions until October 6. Community members are encouraged to include any relevant historical research or descriptive information to support their suggested names. This initiative aims to foster community involvement and ensure that the name reflects the local culture and history.

The Importance of Historical and Geographical Context

The location of the new elementary school offers a rich tapestry of local history and geographical significance. Peachblow Road itself is a name steeped in local lore, and the proximity to railroad tracks and Piatt Road adds layers of historical context. Names that resonate with these elements not only honor the past but also serve as educational tools for future generations.

Community members are urged to delve into the history of Delaware County and Berlin Township when considering name suggestions. Whether it’s a name that pays homage to a local historical figure or one that reflects the natural geography of the area, the goal is to choose a name that will stand the test of time and continue to inspire students for years to come.

Upcoming Board Meeting to Decide the Name

The community’s suggestions will be compiled and used to formulate a final recommendation, which will be presented to the Board of Education at their meeting on October 12. This meeting will be a decisive moment, as the board will make the final call on the name that will adorn the new elementary school.

The district extends its gratitude to all community members for their valuable input and looks forward to unveiling the name that will become a part of Olentangy Schools’ illustrious history.

For those interested in contributing their suggestions, the deadline is fast approaching. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to be a part of local educational history.
