Cheryl Relford, who leads curriculum implementation across Westerville City Schools’ elementary schools, has been selected to serve as the district’s new Executive Director of Elementary Schools.

Pending approval by the WCSD Board of Education, she will assume the role after Barbara Wallace, who spent more than 30 years in the district, retired this year. Wallace had served as executive director since 2014.

As Executive Director of Elementary Schools, Relford will oversee the district’s elementary school programs and administrators, including the district’s Magnet and All-Day Kindergarten programs.

“I am looking forward to working closely with the elementary administrative team as well as the executive leadership team,” Relford said. “Watching my predecessor strengthen the elementary program and create a strong vision inspired me to apply for the position. I know the elementary division will continue to provide outstanding opportunities for students, families and staff.”

Relford joined Westerville in 2013 as principal of Whittier Elementary. She was promoted to Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction in 2019, a position Kellogg created after a vacancy in the Office of Curriculum and Instruction enabled the district to restructure and provide more support to specific grades.

Relford’s career in education started as an elementary teacher at Canton City Schools in 1995. She has taught in schools in Prince George’s County in Maryland, Arlington Public Schools in Virginia and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina. Her first administrative position came in 2003 as an assistant principal at Tuckahoe Elementary in Arlington. Three years later, she became principal at Drew Elementary in the same district.

She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Winston Salem State University and her master’s degree in education from McDaniel College in Maryland.
