Carla Odebralski, P.E., Director of Planning and Engineering for the City of Sunbury, is set to share the latest engineering report at the City Council meeting on February 5. The report provides updates on significant infrastructure projects aimed at improving local roads, wastewater treatment, and pedestrian access.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion Moves Forward

The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Expansion Project has officially been awarded to Simonson Construction following approval at the January 29 City Council meeting. Next steps include meetings with Simonson, Anser, and CT/Verdantas to discuss potential value engineering opportunities and finalize contract details. A pre-construction meeting will be scheduled soon, where the construction timeline will be established.

This expansion is a critical investment in Sunbury’s infrastructure, ensuring the city can keep pace with its growing population and increasing wastewater treatment needs.

Walnut Street Stabilization Will Reopen Long-Closed Road

Another significant project involves the stabilization of Big Walnut Creek’s bank and the long-awaited reopening of Walnut Street south of McGill Street, which has been closed since 2011. Ironsite Inc. has been awarded the construction contract, with work beginning in March.

The initial phase will involve tree and brush removal along the site. Residents in the area will receive notifications about the upcoming work, along with a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document addressing key concerns. The project is expected to be completed by late summer, allowing Walnut Street to finally reopen to the public.

E. Granville Street Widening Project in Design Phase

The E. Granville Street Widening Project, a major roadway improvement initiative, has officially entered the design phase. A contract for design services has been signed with American Structurepoint, Inc., and work is set to begin this month.

Key design activities will include:

  • Site surveys
  • Utility coordination discussions
  • Evaluations of right-of-way impacts
  • Street cross-section alternatives

This project will not only enhance safety and road capacity but will also provide a much-needed pedestrian bridge over State Route 37, improving connectivity for the Ohio-to-Erie Trail. Construction is currently planned to begin in 2027, with further public engagement set for spring 2025.

Planning and Zoning Updates

While January’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting was canceled, the next meeting is scheduled for February 24. No Council actions are currently required on any of these projects at this time.

Sunbury’s Infrastructure Investment Continues

With multiple projects in motion, Sunbury is making significant strides in expanding and improving its transportation and utility infrastructure. As these projects develop, the city remains committed to keeping residents informed and engaged in the planning and construction process.
