John Clark Mayden is “enjoying something of a moment,” according to a feature piece published just before Christmas in the venerable Baltimore Sun newspaper.
The post, entitled “For 50 years, a Baltimore photographer trained his lens on the city. Now he’s in the spotlight.” by the Sun’s Tatyama Turner, is a personal, probing, and powerful look at a man who began his college career right here, at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Mayden graduated in 1974 with a BA in Political Science and a minor in fine arts.
After a long career as a public law attorney for the City of Baltimore, during which time he chronicled the city’s African American community, he collected an astounding 30,000 photographic negatives. His photos have appeared in numerous exhibitions, particularly in the eastern United States.
Mayden’s first book, a collection of photos titled “Baltimore Lives: The Portraits of John Clark Mayden,” was published last year. Several of his images are now appearing in an HBO film, “Between the World and Me.” A trailer for that work can be viewed here.
