Many Delaware Countians are connected to their family history through research and study.

The Delaware County Genealogical Society is active in assisting those individuals through a website (located here) and through volunteer work at the Delaware County District Library.

Each Thursday, those volunteers are on hand to assist patrons at the Main Library between 9:0 AM and 4:30 PM.

The interest in family history is a statewide phenomenon. Ohio is home to one to home to one of the largest genealogical organizations in the word, the Ohio Genealogy Society (OGS). Launched in the 19th century, the Society’s current headquarters is their library facility near Bellville, just up the road on Interstate 71.

Each year, OGS holds a statewide conference. This year’s edition will take place from April 26 through April 29 at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center near Sandusky.

According to conference materials, “The theme for the conference is “What Brought Them Here 1803–2023”. One of the featured speakers will give a presentation on the Great Lakes, and another will talk about Turnpikes, Rivers, and Canals, which are appropriate topics, since we will be meeting on the shores of Lake Erie, and we will be hearing about how our ancestors traveled to and through the Great Lakes region.

There will be workshops focusing on Pennsylvania and Ohio research, as well as sessions on slavery, African American cemeteries, employment, and migration. There is a plethora of sessions on various ethnic groups including Italian, Polish, Czech, Austro-Hungarian, German, Scottish, Canadian, and Irish, as well as tracts on DNA and the military. And we would like to encourage attendees to think about planning some family reunion activities as part of their conference experience.”

One of this year’s conference sponsors is the Richland-Shelby Chapter of the OGS. That Chapter is specifically sponsoring a sessions on Using DNA to further one’s family tree and “Google for Genealogists.”

Registration has opened for the event. For early registrants, the conference cost is $185 for OGS members and $225 for non-members.

More information and online registration is available here.
