In the heart of downtown Delaware, the historic Strand Theatre is launching an intriguing and intellectually stimulating series titled “Meaningful Movies at the Strand Theatre.” This January 2023, the theatre is set to captivate audiences with a lineup of films focused on the theme of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This initiative not only entertains but also invites the community to engage in critical discussions about the future of our world as shaped by technological advancements.

A Century-Old Theatre’s Modern Approach

The Strand Theatre: A Historic Landmark

The Strand Theatre, located at 28 East Winter Street, near Ohio Wesleyan University, is a gem in Delaware’s cultural landscape. Opening its doors on April 10, 1916, the Strand is celebrated as the tenth longest-operating movie theater in the United States. Surviving historical challenges like the Spanish Flu and the Great Depression, this 501(c)(3) non-profit organization continues to thrive, showcasing first-run movies and maintaining its status as a cherished independent movie theater.

A Month-Long Cinematic Adventure

January’s lineup at the Strand promises a journey through the realms of AI, featuring classics and modern masterpieces. Each film is carefully selected to spark thoughts and conversations on how AI impacts and intertwines with human life.

The Schedule:
  • January 2: “Westworld” – A tale of a futuristic amusement park.
  • January 9: “The Matrix” – A revolutionary vision of a simulated reality.
  • January 10: “Ex Machina” – Followed by a panel discussion, this film delves into the ethics and emotions of AI.
  • January 16: “Terminator 2” – A look at AI in a battle for the future.
  • January 23: “Blade Runner” – Exploring AI and identity.
  • January 30: “2001: A Space Odyssey” – A classic odyssey into space and AI.

Films begin at 7:00 PM, with doors opening at 6:30 PM. These evenings are not just about watching movies; they are an invitation to delve deeper into the technological intricacies and ethical dilemmas presented by AI.

Engaging the Community

Interactive Discussions and Reviews

The Strand encourages movie-goers to participate in discussions via the Facebook event page. Here, attendees can share their thoughts, learn more about the weekly films, and read reviews as the series progresses. This interactive element aims to foster a community dialogue around the themes presented in the films.

Why This Matters

AI is no longer a futuristic concept but a present-day reality, influencing various aspects of our lives. From how we interact with technology to ethical considerations and the future of humanity, AI remains a topic of immense importance. The Strand’s film series offers a platform for community members to reflect on these issues in a shared space, enhancing understanding and sparking meaningful conversations.
