Yes, the summer has just started and school has only been out for three weeks or so. Still, some people already have their sights et on start of the new academic year.
Speaking of back to school, a recent announcement from Columbus is right on point.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, in collaboration with the Ohio General Assembly, has announced an expansion of Ohio’s Sales Tax Holiday for 2024. The holiday will commence at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, and extend until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, offering ten days of tax-free shopping.
This year’s Sales Tax Holiday allows tax-free purchases of eligible items up to $500, both in-person and online. The expanded scope aims to alleviate financial pressures on Ohio families, especially those preparing for the new school year.
“Ohio’s sales tax holiday, historically, has been meant to help families buy clothing and school supplies for the upcoming school year,” Governor DeWine stated. “This expanded sales tax break will help Ohio’s families with back-to-school necessities as well as other substantial purchases during a time when so many household budgets are being strained.”
In previous years, the holiday spanned just three days and covered only school-related items, with lower purchase price limits of $75 for clothing and $20 for instructional materials or school supplies. This expansion significantly broadens the range of eligible purchases and increases the price limit, providing greater financial relief to Ohio residents.
However, the sales tax holiday does not cover services or purchases of watercraft, outboard motors, motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vapor products, or any items containing marijuana.
This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to supporting its residents during challenging economic times, ensuring that families can better manage their expenses as the new school year approaches.
