In an effort to enhance neighborhood security and foster a safer community, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office has introduced the Block Watch program. This initiative encourages neighbors to act as the “eyes and ears” of law enforcement, helping to protect one another through vigilant observation and open communication.

Communication is Key

One of the primary benefits of the Block Watch program is the enhancement of communication. There are two essential aspects of this communication:

  1. Among Neighbors: Regular interaction and communication among neighbors create an additional layer of security. By being aware of each other’s routines and recognizing unfamiliar activities, neighbors can promptly alert authorities to potential threats.
  2. With the Sheriff’s Office: Establishing a two-way communication channel between residents and the Sheriff’s Office ensures that any suspicious activities are reported and addressed promptly.

Who Can Join Block Watch?

Block Watch is an inclusive program open to everyone in the community. The main responsibility of Block Watch members is to report any unusual or suspicious activities to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. As residents, you are the most qualified to recognize what is out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. The Sheriff’s Office encourages you to report any concerns, emphasizing the importance of the adage, “better safe than sorry.”

Responsibilities of Block Watch Members

Participating in the Block Watch program involves several key responsibilities:

  • Reporting Suspicious Behavior: If you observe any suspicious activities, contact the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office at (740) 833-2800.
  • Knowing Your Neighbors: While it’s not necessary to become best friends, being aware of your neighbors’ schedules, such as when they are out of town or expecting visitors, can help identify suspicious behavior.
  • Avoiding Vigilantism: Members are strictly advised not to take matters into their own hands. Do not approach suspects or criminals. Instead, report your observations to the authorities.
  • Engaging with the Sheriff’s Office: Invite representatives from the Sheriff’s Office to your neighborhood gatherings. They can provide safety tips, answer questions, and even showcase their K-9 units.

Effectiveness of Block Watch Programs

The success of Block Watch programs is well-documented. A notable example comes from Detroit in the early 1980s, a time when the city was grappling with high crime rates. An experiment compared three similar neighborhoods with different crime prevention strategies:

  1. Doubling car patrols.
  2. Implementing 24-hour foot patrols.
  3. Establishing a neighborhood Block Watch.

The first two approaches showed no significant change in crime rates, except for an increase in arrests with the foot patrols. However, the neighborhood with the Block Watch program experienced a remarkable 52% drop in crime, demonstrating the effectiveness of community vigilance and cooperation.
