The Sunbury Police Department presented its comprehensive report during the December 4, 2024, City Council meeting. The update covered critical operational updates, including fleet management, building improvements, training initiatives, and holiday safety reminders.

Cruiser Fleet Update

The department is addressing significant challenges in its fleet. The newly acquired administrative Durango has been delivered and is on-site, with officials noting its appeal and functionality. Meanwhile, four cruisers are currently out of service:

  • 2014 Ford Explorer: Awaiting auction; repairs for transmission issues would cost $1,850.
  • 2017 Ford Explorer: Awaiting auction; repairs for the vehicle’s computer (ECM) would cost $1,100.
  • 2020 Chevy Tahoe: Needs repairs after a deer collision; the insurance deductible is $1,000.
  • 2020 Chevy Tahoe: Experiencing water contamination in the fuel system, which may have caused injector and transmission issues. Costs are yet to be determined.

To maintain service levels during this transitional period, the department has leased two marked cruisers from Crown for six weeks at a cost of $1,700. This approach is more cost-effective than repairing the outgoing vehicles, which are slated for auction once the new cruisers arrive.

Building Updates

The Sunbury Police Department recently hosted representatives from MS Consultants for a walk-through of their facility. Staff highlighted design issues that require adjustments, and the consulting team is actively working on corrective measures. These improvements aim to enhance operational efficiency and address identified shortcomings.

Training Success

The department successfully conducted its first training session in the new police building. The event, an Intoximeter course certified by the Department of Health, welcomed 12 participants from three different jurisdictions. Officials reported the training went smoothly, underscoring the facility’s capability to host professional development programs for law enforcement personnel.

Holiday Safety Tips

With the holiday season in full swing, the Sunbury Police Department urged residents to remain vigilant to prevent theft and ensure a safe shopping experience. Recommendations included:

  • Locking vehicles and keeping valuables out of sight.
  • Avoiding leaving purses or wallets unattended in shopping carts.
  • Bringing in delivered packages promptly to deter theft.
  • Trusting instincts if a situation feels suspicious.

These reminders are part of the department’s ongoing efforts to keep the community safe during the bustling holiday season.
