Pedestrian safety is taking center stage in Powell as the City announces significant upgrades to crosswalks on Olentangy Street in 2025. The project will enhance existing crossings and add a new one, making the area more accessible and secure for residents and visitors alike.
A Safer Path for Powell Pedestrians
The improvement plan focuses on three crosswalks:
Olentangy and Depot Streets
Olentangy and Hall Streets
Olentangy and Traditions Way (a new crossing)
Each crossing will be equipped with pedestal-mounted rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs), a cutting-edge solution to improve pedestrian safety. These user-initiated signals are designed to enhance visibility for drivers and provide pedestrians with a safer way to navigate busy streets.
Upgraded Infrastructure to Match Safety Goals
The project includes more than just flashing beacons. Upgrades will also involve:
- Improved pavement markings for better visibility and guidance.
- Curb modifications to streamline pedestrian flow and compliance with accessibility standards.
- Sidewalk and storm sewer enhancements to improve functionality and durability.
These improvements are tailored to support safe pedestrian access to housing, restaurants, and businesses in Powell’s bustling downtown.
Funding Boost from the State of Ohio
The City of Powell secured an abbreviated safety funding grant from the State of Ohio Highway Safety Improvement Program, covering 90 percent of the design and construction costs. This funding underscores the project’s importance and allows the City to allocate resources efficiently.
The upgrades are part of the 2025 City Council-approved Capital Improvement Program, reflecting the City’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure and community safety.
