For two Saturdays this July, Ohio Wesleyan University’s Perkins Observatory will trade in its nighttime view of the heavens for a dazzling look at the center of our solar system. The “Celebration of the Sun” daytime skywatches will be held from 2 to 4 PM on July 19 and 26 at the observatory, located at 3199 Columbus Pike in Delaware.
Don Stevens, director of Perkins Observatory, says the Sun remains one of the most profound mysteries and powerful influences in our universe. “It’s no wonder it was an object of worship and awe,” Stevens notes. “We seem insignificant next to its awesome power, yet we’ve evolved the ability to learn its secrets.”
Science, Safety, and Solar Spectacle
These special daytime events, which replace the observatory’s typical Friday night skywatches during the long summer daylight hours, offer a rare opportunity to safely observe the Sun. Weather permitting, visitors will use telescopes equipped with solar filters and eclipse glasses to view dramatic features like sunspots and solar prominences—massive eruptions that dance along the Sun’s surface.
Perkins staff and volunteers will guide guests through safe observation techniques while sharing insights into the physics of solar activity. Attendees can expect a mix of education and wonder, delivered with the same passion that has made the observatory a local favorite for nearly a century.
Beyond the Lens: Interactive and Family-Friendly Fun
The Celebration of the Sun is more than just a look skyward. Visitors can take part in hands-on activities such as rocket launches, sundial demonstrations, a walkable 1,000-yard model of the solar system, and guided tours of the historic observatory. And for those who enjoy a little local lore, the infamous Perkins ghost story will make its return to round out the program.

Perkins Observatory will resume its regular Friday evening skywatches on August 1, featuring views through the impressive 32-inch Schottland Telescope.
