Big Walnut Local Schools is inviting parents and community members to get involved in district schools, while reminding prospective volunteers that some roles require advance training and approval.
The district says volunteers play an important part in supporting students, teachers, and school activities. At the same time, Big Walnut has established a process intended to make sure those working directly with students understand district expectations and have completed appropriate screening.
Three Steps Before Volunteering
For volunteer positions that require district approval, individuals must complete three steps before beginning:
- Complete the online volunteer sign-up form and training, which takes about five minutes.
- Complete an online background check.
- Receive approval from the Big Walnut Board of Education.
The district recommends beginning the process three to four weeks before a volunteer’s first anticipated event.
Prospective volunteers do not need to take any separate action to obtain board approval. After the sign-up form, training, and background check are completed, the district office will place the volunteer’s name on the agenda for an upcoming board meeting. Once approval is granted, the district will notify the volunteer that they may begin serving.
School secretaries have access to the district’s approved volunteer list and will permit only those who have completed the required steps to serve in positions subject to the approval process.
When a Background Check Is Required
Examples of activities requiring training, a background check, and board approval include:
- Chaperoning a field trip
- Providing learning support in a classroom
- Helping in a school during the instructional day
Other activities generally do not require the full approval process. Examples include:
- Making copies or preparing classroom materials
- PTO volunteer work
- Helping with a classroom celebration at school
- Picking up a child from school
- Serving as a guest speaker
- Attending a student performance
The district notes that these examples are not exhaustive, so anyone uncertain about whether a particular activity requires approval should check with the school or district before volunteering.
A Continuing Community Role
Big Walnut officials say the district is fortunate to have strong support from parents and other community volunteers and thanked those who have already contributed their time. The district described that involvement as part of its broader effort to inspire and guide students while maintaining a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment.
With another school year approaching, Big Walnut is encouraging those interested in becoming more directly involved in their schools to begin the volunteer approval process early.
