Updated with additional information: Tough times in the bricks-and-mortar end of retailing continue, as evidenced this month by the expected bankruptcy of the venerable Sears department store chain.

Sears also owns and operates K-Mart and other allied operations.

In a press release which can be read here, Edward Lampert, Chairman of Sears Holdings shared, “As we look toward the holiday season, Sears and Kmart stores remain open for business and our dedicated associates look forward to serving our members and customers. We thank our vendors for their continuing support through the upcoming season and beyond. We also thank our associates for their hard work and commitment to providing millions of Americans with value and convenience.”

With the filing, Sears announced plans to close an additional 142 unprofitable stores in 2018 in addition to the 46 already announced. From almost 2,000 outlets open for business as recently as five years ago, this will leave between 800-900 open locations.[widgets_on_pages id=1]

No Delaware County Sears outlet or store is included in this list, although three others are in Ohio. Those include the following:

Kmart, 15891 State Rt 170 East in Liverpool
Kmart, 17840 Bagley Road in Middleburg Heights
Sears, 5320 Youngstown Road in Niles

These locations will be holding liquidation sales in the coming weeks.

Sears, Roebuck and Company was established in 1892, and was the Amazon of its day. The company’s mail order catalogs offered everything from dishware to clothes to seeds to tools – and even houses!  North central Ohio has several examples of Sears houses along its streets.
