Last week, the Planning Commission for the City of Westerville had the opportunity to talk about an innovative proposed development on the northeast corner of Polaris Parkway and Worthington Road.

A conceptual review was held by the Commission to share some preliminary thoughts on the preliminary application.

This would be an expansion for Germain and its Volkswagen dealership. The new development would occupy a currently undeveloped 7.5 acre lot, and would include 378 parking spaces including dealer lot spaces.

As discussed in the meeting, the proposal has some unique features that set it apart from other similar facilities. For one, it includes room for ten EV charging stations with photovoltaic power. In addition to a “green wall” on the actual dealership building, the development calls for the creation of a small public space with a park-like atmosphere.

The park would feature a pavilion and would have space for food trucks to set up.

Architect Dave Kaldy discussed these features as making a “statement” in terms of an entry point into Westerville. Commission members responded favorably to the community park idea, suggesting that it might become a popular weekend place to relax and hold outdoor events and activities.

Much of the discussion focused on the issue of access, including the placement of a curb cut or cuts on Worthington Road. Public art and landscaping were also suggested.

Recommendations will not be considered and a full application for a preliminary plan may be submitted in the coming weeks.
