Ohio’s unemployment rate was 3.9% in July 2022, unchanged from June (and, for that matter, from May as well), according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 7,000 over the month, from a revised 5,477,000 in June 2022 to 5,484,000 in July 2022.

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in July was 224,000, unchanged from June. The number of unemployed has decreased by 71,000 in the past 12 months from 295,000. The July unemployment rate for Ohio decreased from 5.1% in July 2021. The U.S. unemployment rate for July 2022 was 3.5%, down from 3.6% in June 2022, and down from 5.4% in July 2021.
In July 2022, the labor force participation rate in Ohio was 61.9%, down from 62.0% in June 2022 and up from 61.7% in July 2021. During the same period, the national labor force participation rate was 62.1%, down from 62.2% in June 2022 and up from 61.7% in July 2021.

Among the state’s 88 counties, preliminary July 2022 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 2.7% in Mercer County to a high of 6.4% in Marion County. From June, unemployment rates increased in 30 counties, decreased in 29 counties, and did not change in 29 counties. The comparable July unemployment rate for Ohio was 4.4%. Three counties had unemployment rates below 3.0% in July. The counties with the lowest rates, other than Mercer were: Holmes, 2.8% and Putnam, 2.9%. Four counties had unemployment rates at or above 6.0% in June. The counties with the highest rates, other than Marion were: Monroe, 6.3%; and Jefferson and Meigs, 6.0%
