For the 44th year in a row, the City of Delaware has been named a Tree City USA honoree by the Arbor Day Foundation. This recognition underscores the City’s unwavering commitment to urban forest management and environmental sustainability. The Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, acknowledges communities that prioritize tree care and environmental stewardship.

Delaware’s dedication goes beyond maintaining its Tree City status; the city also received the prestigious Growth Award for the sixth consecutive year. This award recognizes cities that reach key milestones in sustainable community forestry through ongoing initiatives that enhance tree care, planting efforts, and public engagement.

The Value of Trees in Urban Communities

Urban trees play a crucial role in making cities healthier and more livable. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, trees help reduce energy consumption by providing shade and cooling, ultimately lowering urban heat levels. They also contribute to increasing property values and improving air and water quality.

By filtering pollutants, managing stormwater runoff, and creating natural habitats for wildlife, trees significantly impact local ecosystems. They serve as a refuge for birds, small mammals, and pollinators, supporting biodiversity within the city. Delaware’s long-standing commitment to urban forestry ensures that these ecological benefits continue to thrive for generations to come.

Looking Ahead: Celebrating Arbor Day in Delaware

“This recognition celebrates the hard work done to support trees throughout our community,” said Delaware Parks and Recreation Director Ted Miller, who credited the efforts of City Arborist Hunter Smith and the City’s Shade Tree Commission for their dedication to the city’s tree management programs.

Delaware plans to celebrate its Tree City USA status in April during Arbor Day events, with details still being finalized. These celebrations will further highlight the city’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and community involvement in tree planting and preservation.
