For Delaware County residents who need help putting food on the table, getting to the food pantry can be a challenge of its own. A new Food Access Program is working to remove that obstacle by pairing free groceries with free transportation.
People In Need, Inc. of Delaware County is partnering with Delaware County Transit to provide no-cost, round-trip bus rides from select locations to the organization’s food pantry at 138 Johnson Drive in Delaware. The service will be offered every other week through Sept. 23.
Who Can Participate
The program is available to residents of the Village of Ostrander and Orange Township whose household income is at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. Funding is being provided through the Community Development Block Grant program.
Once participants arrive at People In Need, they will be able to receive groceries from the organization’s pantry. People In Need has served Delaware County residents facing food insecurity and other immediate needs since 1981.
How to Reserve a Ride
Participants must reserve a seat at least 48 hours in advance by calling Delaware County Transit at 740-363-3355 and selecting Option 1. Callers should say they are requesting transportation through the Food Access Program.
Riders should bring identification and be ready for pickup at their scheduled time.
