Now comes the hard part.

The US Census Bureau has begun the long and cumbersome process of contacting those Americans who have failed to respond to requests to register with the 2020 Census.

As of July 1, and based on the current self-response rate of 61.8%, the Census Bureau estimates it will need to visit approximately 56 million addresses to collect responses in person. Because of the scale of this operation, the Census Bureau will begin the work in a few areas before operations begin in earnest across the country.

Two such groups have been announced, none are in Ohio.

The majority of census offices across the country will begin follow-up work on August 11. All offices will conclude work no later than October 31.

It’s not too late to respond, and there are many Delaware Countians who can do so. While Ohio’s self-response rate currently sites at 66.5%, that for Delaware County is 76.5% — meaning that 23.5% of the county’s population has still not been counted. Households can still respond now by completing and mailing back the paper questionnaire they received, responding online at 2020census.gov or by phone at 844-330-2020.
