John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) has officially closed its Blue Covered parking lot as of September 6, marking a significant step in the airport’s expansion and redevelopment efforts. The lot, known for its affordable covered parking option, will no longer accept new parkers as the airport prepares for the construction of a new terminal.

Travelers who parked in the Blue Covered lot before the closing date can still access their vehicles until September 23 after which the lot will be inaccessible.

Blue Covered Lot No Longer an Option

Previously, the Blue Covered lot charged $12 per 24-hour period, making it a popular option for those seeking economical covered parking. With its closure, CMH no longer offers covered parking outside of the garage. Travelers seeking a covered parking solution will now need to park in the airport’s garage, which charges $23 per day.

The closure of the Blue Covered lot signals a shift in parking availability and marks the first major change as CMH prepares for the construction of its new terminal, scheduled to open by 2029. Other shuttle lots, such as the Blue, Red, and Green lots, remain open for travelers but do not provide covered protection.

A Terminal for the Future

The closure of the Blue Covered lot is part of a larger redevelopment plan at John Glenn International. CMH is constructing a brand-new terminal that will replace the existing one, which will be demolished upon the new terminal’s completion. The space currently occupied by the existing terminal will be repurposed for overnight aircraft parking, ensuring more planes are ready for their first flights of the day.

Key features of the new terminal include:

  • Effortless Travel: A centralized security checkpoint will streamline the process for all travelers, eliminating the need for disconnected concourses and allowing better access to amenities.
  • Expanded Parking: A new 5,000-car parking garage will offer more parking spaces, including electric vehicle chargers and enhanced accessibility options.
  • Convenient Connections: A pedestrian bridge will link the terminal to the transportation center, parking garage, and rental car center, providing easy access to shuttles, rideshares, taxis, and buses.
  • Relaxation and Dining: A central marketplace will offer passengers breathtaking views of the airfield and skyline, along with exciting new food and beverage options.
  • Sustainability: The terminal’s eco-friendly design will incorporate energy-efficient technology, such as smart glass and a reclaimed water system.

Changes in Parking Until 2029

With the closure of the Blue Covered lot, travelers should be aware of limited covered parking options until the completion of the new parking garage. The airport’s garage remains the only covered option, but it comes at a higher daily rate compared to the shuttle lots.

Travelers can stay informed on parking availability and updates by using the CMH website and mobile app. Although the transition period may be inconvenient for some, CMH assures travelers that the future parking garage and terminal will provide improved accessibility, capacity, and convenience.
