The historic Strand Theatre will host a special screening of the documentary What It Takes on Thursday, April 30, at 6:00 PM, followed by a live panel discussion. Doors open at 5:30 PM.
Directed by Jeff Shulman, the film is making its Ohio and Midwest premiere in Delaware. The event is sponsored by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Delaware Public Health District, and Delaware-Morrow Mental Health & Recovery Services Board.
General admission tickets are $8.50, with discounted pricing of $7 for students and $6 for children, seniors, and military attendees. Organizers encourage a broad audience, including community members, educators, healthcare professionals, and families, to attend.
What It Takes explores the realities, challenges, and resilience surrounding substance use disorder, offering a deeply personal look at recovery through lived experiences. The post-screening panel is designed to deepen the conversation, providing an opportunity for reflection, audience engagement, and dialogue around one of the most pressing public health issues facing communities today.
“This event is about more than a film—it’s about bringing people together,” said Tracey Peyton, managing director of the Strand. “We believe in the power of storytelling to foster connection, reduce stigma, and strengthen our community.”
Panelists include Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Balzer; Lisa Dooley of the Delaware-Morrow Mental Health & Recovery Services Board; Bailey Hilliard of the Chesterfield County Jail, where part of the film was made; and Loraine Maguire of Southeast Healthcare.
The discussion will be moderated by retired jurist Scott VanDerKarr, who served 20 years on the Franklin County Municipal Court and has long worked to address substance use disorder within the justice system.
