On October 3 at 12:00 PM, Ohio Wesleyan University will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on the JAYwalk for the new John F. Milligan Library—a moment that marks far more than the start of construction. It signals the beginning of a new era for the university and the surrounding Delaware community.

Reimagining the Campus Core

The Milligan Library isn’t just a replacement for the shuttered Beeghly Library, which closed in 2023 due to moisture and mold issues. It’s a full reimagining of what a university library can be. Designed by Perkins Eastman and Levin Porter Architects, the building will serve as the intellectual and creative heart of campus—featuring technology-rich classrooms, nearly 300 study seats, fine arts studios, and flexible gathering areas to foster collaboration across disciplines.

Floor-to-ceiling glass, outdoor rooms, and open-access designs invite not just students but the broader community into the space. The library will also include dedicated areas for rare books and special collections, reinforcing Ohio Wesleyan’s academic depth while embracing a new architectural openness.

A Historic Gift and a Sustainable Future

The $50 million donation that made the project possible is the largest in university history. It comes from six alumni families, with leadership from John F. Milligan and Kathryn Bradford Milligan, both members of the Class of 1983. Their contribution reflects a shared vision of a university that is bold, forward-looking, and rooted in tradition.

At the same time, Ohio Wesleyan is launching its largest on-site solar energy project. The solar installation will reduce the university’s carbon footprint and offer hands-on learning experiences for students studying renewable energy and environmental science.

More Than a Library

What sets this project apart is its intent to bridge town and gown. With multiple entry points and accessible gathering spaces, the Milligan Library is being shaped as a public square for both campus and community. Whether you’re attending an arts showcase, participating in a workshop, or simply finding a quiet place to read, the new library will welcome you.

The groundbreaking event on October 3 will include special announcements about both the library and solar initiatives. The university anticipates the building’s grand opening in January 2027.

In a time when higher education is redefining its role in a changing world, Ohio Wesleyan is doing more than keeping pace—it’s building something that lasts.
