At its regular meeting on Monday, April 7, the Westerville City Schools Board of Education welcomed its newest member, Dwight Heckelman, who was officially sworn into office. Heckelman steps into the role to complete the unexpired term of Tracy Davidson, which runs through December 31, 2025.

A Vision Rooted in Impact

Heckelman’s appointment brings a fresh perspective to the board, one shaped by years of dedication to education, youth development, and community betterment. Currently serving as the Executive Director of CreateWell, a youth mental health nonprofit, Heckelman has spent his career at the crossroads of creativity and care.

“I am committed to having a positive impact on the lives of our youth, and I believe that strong schools are the foundation of a thriving community,” Heckelman shared. “Westerville has been an incredible place to live and work, and much of that is due to the excellence of our schools.”

Innovator in Music Education

A trailblazer in music education, Heckelman is best known as the founder and former CEO of Groove U Ltd, a music industry entrepreneurship program based in Columbus. Under his leadership, Groove U grew from an idea to a respected two-year college alternative, backed by over $2 million in capital and a curriculum designed to give students real-world industry experience.

His work at Groove U reflected his belief in practical, passion-driven learning and his drive to build innovative educational pathways for students outside of traditional models.

Deep Roots in the Community

Beyond his entrepreneurial achievements, Heckelman has made significant contributions as a community leader. He has held board positions with the Columbus Music Commission and Music Loves Ohio, and he has offered his guidance as a member of advisory boards at both the Delaware Area Career Center and Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center.

These roles have allowed him to influence educational programming and support systems for a wide range of students—experience he now brings to the Westerville boardroom.

A Focus on Student Success

As a newly-appointed board member, Heckelman is focused on maintaining and enhancing the district’s reputation for excellence. “I am passionate about ensuring that every student has the resources and support they need to succeed,” he said. “I want to contribute my skills and dedication to maintaining and improving the high standards of education in Westerville City Schools.”

Looking Ahead

With a background in both nonprofit leadership and innovative education, Dwight Heckelman’s addition to the Westerville City Schools Board of Education signals a forward-thinking approach to student support and community collaboration. His term may be just beginning, but his impact—rooted in creativity, compassion, and commitment—is already taking shape.
