Third-grade students from 11 Westerville City Schools elementary buildings are coming together for an extraordinary celebration of world languages and cultures through music. The Nations Together in Song concert series will be held at 7:00 PM on November 19, November 20, and November 21 at Westerville Central High School, showcasing the power of unity and the joy of cultural exploration through song.

A Celebration Across Three Nights

The concert series will involve approximately 840 students, with different schools performing on each evening. Audiences will experience a vibrant blend of cultures and musical traditions, brought to life by these young voices.

Performance Schedule:

  • November 19: Cherrington, Hawthorne, Robert Frost, and Whittier elementaries
  • November 20: Hanby, Huber Ridge, and Minerva France elementaries
  • November 21: Annehurst, Emerson, McVay, and Pointview elementaries

This format ensures each school’s unique contributions are highlighted while offering a rich and varied program every evening.

A Tradition of Unity and Diversity

The Nations Together in Song concert began in 2015, the brainchild of McVay Elementary music teacher Evan McIntyre and former Hawthorne Elementary music teacher Sarah McPeak. Designed to connect students and celebrate Westerville’s diversity, the event has grown into a beloved annual tradition.

“The goal of this concert is to bring the Westerville community together and foster a sense of unity and belonging,” said Mary Rebekah Fortman, music teacher at Annehurst Elementary. “We hope that our students are able to experience joyful music-making while learning about a variety of cultures. Together, their voices are powerful and can make a difference in this world.”

A Multilingual Experience

This year’s program features eight songs in a variety of languages, including Chinese, Arabic, Spanish, and Akan, reflecting the linguistic and cultural diversity within the District. A cornerstone of the concert is the “Friendship Canon,” a piece that teaches the word “friend” in 16 different languages—a poignant reminder of shared human connection.

By learning and performing songs from around the globe, students are immersed in the traditions, sounds, and values of cultures outside their own. According to the organizers, the concert emphasizes the importance of embracing diversity, creating understanding, and fostering community bonds.

Bringing the Community Together

The Nations Together in Song concert highlights the dedication of Westerville’s music educators in enriching their students’ lives. Through their collaboration, teachers have created an event that not only showcases musical talent but also serves as a testament to the District’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural awareness.

The event promises to be a heartwarming and inspiring experience, leaving a lasting impression on students, families, and the wider community.
