A strong statewide ranking is an achievement for any high school. Westerville City Schools managed it at all three. Westerville Central, Westerville South and Westerville North each placed among Ohio’s highest-ranked public high schools in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools rankings.
The results also gave Westerville a clean sweep of the Central Ohio top 25.
A Strong Showing Across The District
Westerville Central led the district at No. 68 among more than 900 ranked Ohio high schools. Westerville South followed at No. 86, while Westerville North reached No. 119.
Their Central Ohio placements were even more striking (out of 144 schools):
- Westerville Central: No. 13 in Central Ohio and No. 68 in Ohio
- Westerville South: No. 17 in Central Ohio and No. 86 in Ohio
- Westerville North: No. 22 in Central Ohio and No. 119 in Ohio
That placed all three among the region’s top 25 out of 144 schools, according to the district’s ranking announcement. With more than 900 Ohio schools included, Central and South finished roughly within the state’s top 10 percent. North landed comfortably within the top 15 percent.
More Than A Single Test Score
The rankings are designed to measure several parts of a school’s academic performance rather than relying upon one examination or graduation statistic. For its 2026-2027 rankings, U.S. News considered approximately 27,000 eligible public high schools nationally and ranked nearly 18,000. College readiness accounted for 30 percent of each school’s score, while state assessment proficiency and state assessment performance each accounted for 20 percent.
Graduation rates, college curriculum breadth and the performance of underserved students each represented another 10 percent. College readiness included student participation and performance in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses and examinations, according to the ranking methodology announcement.
Three Schools Sharing The Spotlight
The broader significance for Westerville is not simply that one campus reached the upper portion of the rankings. All three did.
Each school serves a different portion of the community, yet Central, South and North remained separated by only nine places in the Central Ohio rankings. That consistency points to academic performance extending across the district rather than being concentrated within a single building.
Rankings cannot capture every part of a student’s high school experience, including school culture, extracurricular opportunities and individual support. They do, however, provide one widely followed national comparison of measurable outcomes. On that score, Westerville’s three high schools entered the new academic year with plenty to celebrate.
