Sunbury is seeking candidates to fill two vacancies, one on the Planning and Zoning Commission and one on the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA).

  • Planning and Zoning Commission and BZA Board Member Qualities
  • Must meet the minimum criteria set by the charter:
  • An elector of the Municipality (registered to vote as a resident of Sunbury), and
  • Cannot hold any other office or be an employee of the Municipality.

Currently, the Planning and Zoning Commission meets on the fourth Monday of the month. The BZA meets on an as-needed basis.

The Planning and Zoning Commission shall have the power and duty to hear applications for land use, zoning classifications, or districts and, as merited, to submit written recommendations for legislative action or to render final determinations for administrative action; to initiate, review, and recommend legislation, rules, and regulations on all matters of municipal planning, land use, and zoning classification; and to exercise such other powers, duties, and functions as provided by the Council.

The Board of Zoning Appeals shall have the power and duty to hear and decide appeals for exceptions to and variances in the application of resolutions, ordinances, regulations, other legislative measures, and administrative determinations governing zoning in the Municipality, as may be required to afford justice and avoid unreasonable hardship. The Board of Zoning Appeals may make advisory recommendations to the Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission concerning zoning matters, and the Board of Zoning Appeals shall exercise such other powers, duties, and functions as provided by the Council.

Residents of Sunbury who meet the minimum criteria for being a member of the above two boards are encouraged to express their interest in being appointed by sending an email and resume to Allen Rothermel at their earliest convenience and by June 11, 2021. You can also drop off a letter of interest and resume at the Sunbury Administrative Office at 9 East Granville Street. If you have previously applied for a BZA position within the last year we will not need a new expression of interest.

Letters of interest and resumes will be accepted until the positions are filled by Council.
