The community gathered to celebrate the completion of the new “ninja-style” agility course playground at Freeman Park on Wednesday, July 6. The playground, intended for ages 13 and up, was designed to fill a recreational need for ‘tweens’. Prize tokens were hidden on the park’s two playgrounds for children to find and exchange for prizes. A rubber surface was added to improve the existing younger children’s playground.

While the playground celebration was held, the park improvements will be finalized throughout the summer and fall with the addition of basketball hoops sized for small children, a native Ohio prairie meadow area, grass seeding, drainage improvements, and other finishing touches.

Park improvements were funded by the State of Ohio and were the result of the 2020 Parks and Trails Master Plan that outlines a vision for the future of Genoa Township recreational areas.

Freeman Park is 6.7 acres and features a shelter house with free wifi provided by Westerville Public Library (which launched in April of this year), picnic tables and grills, restroom (open year-round), a playground, sandpit excavation toy (ADA accessible), athletic fields, basketball courts and a 1/3 mile loop trail featuring a ‘Born Learning Trail’ made up of activity stations to help parents engage children in interactive games.

The new playground features ADA accessible playground surfacing. An unused asphalt surface in the rear of the park was removed and in its place, natural grasses, flowers and trees will be cultivated. Park renovations were funded through a grant from the State of Ohio.

Freeman Park is located at 6460 Freeman Road.
