A piece of Genoa Township history is soon to have a new home.

The building known as “Genoe,” which is the first township hall, sits close to a busy location at the northeast corner of Tussic Street Road and Big Walnut Road.

The name comes from the building’s fan-shaped stone sign which reads “GENOE TOWN HOUSE 1880.”

The structure is slated to be moved in one piece to accommodate a Delaware County infrastructure project. Westbound travelers along Big Walnut Road are hampered in viewing southbound traffic on Big Walnut Road as the hall sticks out, impeding clear vision.

According to the Township, The brick building…will be lifted and moved in one piece. Big Walnut Road will be closed while the delicate work takes place. Short-term closures will also impact Old 3C Highway on the day the building is transported via a low flatbed semi-truck trailer to McNamara park.

The project had been scheduled to take place in October, but has been delayed due to the completion of the permitting process. Dates for the project to resume are to-be-determined but are anticipated in December 2022.

The building’s historical significance earned it state funding as well. Genoa Township will contribute to see the structure given new life, purpose, and a safe location. While details are still in planning phase, the relocated building is intended to become a meeting space and repository for local history.”
