The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), a regional council consisting of over 80 local governments and community partners in Delaware County and Central Ohio, has announced its collaboration with the PLANNING2050 (PLG2050) partnership.
PLG2050 is a groundbreaking initiative that seeks to revolutionize planning practices by enabling cities and communities to create and track their commitments, goals, and metrics. The initiative aims to ensure that these critical systems become equitable, resilient, and carbon neutral by 2050.
“As the Central Ohio region expands, it’s crucial that we cooperate with our communities in planning and preparing for the future,” said William Murdock, executive director of MORPC. “Effective planning requires the best data and practices to address sustainability, health, and equity for our most vulnerable residents. PLANNING2050 serves to connect and support the important work that lies ahead.”
Since its establishment in 2021, the American Planning Association–Sustainable Communities Division (APA-SCD) has backed PLG2050 and has attracted numerous professional organizations, including The Congress for New Urbanism (CNU), American Institute of Architects (AIA), Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI), United States Green Building Council (USGBC), International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP), and the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA).
Julio Carrillo, director of Planning Commitment, Inc., praised MORPC’s leadership in supporting PLANNING2050, saying, “Their decisive commitment and clear metrics and goals not only help launch our database but also inspire their members to actively participate in this initiative. We’re collaborating on the development of the dashboard platform and user interface, which gives us confidence that we’re building a transformative tool for the next generation of planners. MORPC has been an outstanding leader throughout this initial process, and we’re confident that our strong partnership will continue as we begin tracking and monitoring their commitments.”
Building upon the work of Sustainable2050, PLG2050 is closely aligned with the goals and objectives outlined in the Regional Sustainability Agenda. As Central Ohio continues to lead through partnerships, PLG2050 will grant members access to national and international networks, allowing them to learn from other cities and regions working towards sustainability goals.
Sustainable2050 is a program that aids MORPC member communities in their sustainability efforts through direct technical assistance, collaboration, and recognition. MORPC collaborates with Sustainable2050 communities to benchmark their initiatives and monitor progress in achieving sustainability goals and objectives. This partnership allows MORPC to understand the collective impact of these efforts on Central Ohio’s quality of life.
MORPC unites communities to share best practices and plan for the region’s future growth and sustainability. Through its Metropolitan Transportation Plan and Regional Sustainability Agenda, MORPC promotes sustainability by positioning Central Ohio and its local communities as national leaders in sustainable practices through inventive partnerships, innovative solutions, and adaptable processes.
