Powell is celebrating one of its own, professional athlete Nate Ebner, for his remarkable achievements in both football and rugby. On Tuesday, Powell’s Mayor Tom Counts, alongside the Powell City Council, honored Ebner’s recent induction into the Jewish Sports Heritage Association. In recognition of his contributions to sports and his deep ties to the local community, the city shared on social media that it has declared April 6, 2025, as “Nate Ebner Day.” 🎉👏

Nate Ebner is more than just a local athlete; his career has taken him from the fields of Ohio State University (OSU) to the NFL and even the Olympic stage, representing the United States. Ebner’s journey, particularly in light of the challenges he overcame, is an inspiring story that continues to resonate throughout Powell and beyond.

From Powell to the NFL: Ebner’s Unique Athletic Path

Nate Ebner’s athletic career is anything but traditional. Born in Dublin on December 14, 1988, Ebner grew up immersed in rugby, a sport that would shape his early years and serve as the foundation for his later success. Though he did not play high school football, Ebner’s athletic talents were undeniable.

When he arrived at Ohio State University, his focus was initially on rugby. However, by his junior year, Ebner decided to walk on to the Ohio State Buckeyes football team. Despite starting late, his drive and talent earned him a spot on the team as a special teams player. Ebner’s hard work was rewarded with a scholarship and recognition as the team’s most inspirational player.

In 36 career games at OSU, Ebner made 30 tackles, showcasing his knack for special teams. His performance on the field caught the attention of NFL scouts, leading to a pivotal moment in his career.

Professional Success in the NFL

Ebner’s breakthrough into the NFL came when he was selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. As a special teamer and safety, Ebner quickly became known for his relentless work ethic and determination, contributing significantly to the Patriots’ successes.

During his time with the Patriots, Ebner earned three Super Bowl rings, winning Super Bowl XLIX, LI, and LIII. His performance on the field, combined with his leadership qualities, made him an essential part of the Patriots’ special teams unit. After several years with New England, he later signed with the New York Giants, continuing his legacy in the NFL before becoming a free agent.

Returning to Rugby and Olympic Dreams

Although Nate Ebner made a name for himself in the NFL, his roots in rugby were never forgotten. Before focusing on football, Ebner had an illustrious rugby career, playing for the U.S. Under-19 and Under-20 national teams. He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at both the 2007 and 2008 IRB Junior World Championships, further cementing his place as a top athlete in the sport.

In 2016, Ebner took an unprecedented step, balancing his football career with a return to rugby, competing for the U.S. national rugby sevens team at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Although the U.S. did not win a medal, Ebner’s dedication to representing his country in both rugby and football is a testament to his incredible versatility and perseverance.

Personal Life and Community Impact

Off the field, Nate Ebner’s contributions extend into business and philanthropy. He is a minority owner of Major League Rugby’s New England Free Jacks, a team in the burgeoning professional rugby league. His involvement in the sport continues to grow, reflecting his commitment to promoting rugby’s development in the United States.

Beyond his business ventures, Ebner’s connection to his faith and heritage was recently celebrated when he was inducted into the Jewish Sports Heritage Association. This recognition is not only a reflection of his success in sports but also his standing as a role model for the Jewish community, both locally and nationally.

Powell’s decision to honor Ebner with a dedicated day underscores the city’s pride in his accomplishments and his status as a hometown hero. Nate Ebner Day, set for April 6, 2025, will serve as a time for the community to reflect on his achievements and celebrate his impact on the world of sports.
