A long-anticipated pedestrian safety project is moving closer to construction at one of Powell’s growing travel corridors.

The City of Powell says improvements at the Home Road and Steitz Road intersection are expected to begin this June, following continued coordination with the Delaware County Engineer’s Office and Delaware County. Once completed, the work will create a safer north-south crossing of Home Road for pedestrians and cyclists at the signalized intersection.

Because the intersection falls under the jurisdiction of the Delaware County Engineer’s Office, the project has required county review, prioritization, and coordination before moving into construction. City officials said that process can affect timing, but they also noted the county’s partnership in helping move the safety improvements forward.

The project reflects the kind of shared infrastructure work often needed in fast-growing areas, where city priorities, county-maintained roads, traffic signals, and pedestrian connections all meet in the same place.

The completed design calls for several upgrades aimed at making the intersection more accessible and predictable for those crossing on foot or by bike. Planned improvements include new pedestrian crossing indicators at the traffic signal, a new north-south crossing on the west side of the intersection, pavement markings, signage, a new curb ramp on the south side of Home Road, and a new path connection to the existing path along Home Road.

Together, those changes are intended to give pedestrians and cyclists a clearer, safer route across Home Road while tying the crossing into existing nearby path infrastructure.

The City of Powell is currently obtaining contractor bids for the project. After a contractor is selected and placed under contract, crews will be able to begin construction.

For residents and path users in the area, the improvements will mark a visible step toward better pedestrian connectivity at a busy intersection, one where safety depends not only on traffic control, but also on giving people outside of vehicles a clearly marked and accessible place to cross.
