The former Delaware County Courthouse, a landmark at the corner of North Sandusky Street and West Central Avenue since 1868, will be the focus of an application by the Delaware County Commissioners at a February 27 meeting of the Delaware Historic Preservation Commission.

The application for a Certificate of Appropriateness asks for review and authorization to perform the following work on the historic building:

  • Removal and reconfiguration of sidewalks on the courthoue’s south and east sides with a “better coordinated monument plaza” constructed on the east side.
  • The layout of the new monument plaza as developed with the County’s Veterans Service Commission. The Civil War memorial will remain in its historic location. New stairs and brick retaining walls will be installed.
  • Construction of a new utility enclosure on the west end of the building to be built in a way that coordinates with the buidling’s historic appearance.
  • Removal of a rusted fire escape.

Architectural plans for the changes were developed by noted firm Schooley-Caldwell, which has been involved in large-scale preservation projects of important public buildings, including the Ohio Statehouse and the Utah State Capitol building.

The meeting will take place in Council Chambers at 6:30 PM.
