At its meeting later this week, the City of Delaware Historic Preservation Commission will be reviewing proposed storefront alterations to a 140 to 150 year old commercial building at 67 North Sandusky Street.

Through an informal review, the Commission can comment on proposals before they actually come for an official vote. In most cases, such as this one, the information provided by the applicant includes a recommendation from the City’s planning staff. In this case, the recommendation is for eventual project approval.

Materials supplied by the property owner provide a fascinating look at how a building of that vintage can change over time — not only in its appearance, but in the buildings which surround it. In the case of the property at 67 North Sandusky Street, adjacent structures have been demolished during its lifetime and the original storefront – seen in a photo showing a circa 1900 circus parade — has been changed more than once.

The proposal advanced by the owner calls for a new front which is primarily glass, incorporating original prism glass if still intact.

The agenda for the meeting, showing this history and the owner’s proposal, can be seen below.

The Commission will meet on Thursday, January 22 at 6:30 in Council Chambers.
