The generosity of the folks at Zion United Church of Christ in Delaware is in great evidence on winter weeks like this one.

The church is again opening their facility as “A Place of Warmth” for those without benefit of a warm place to stay during chilly nights. This week, the doors will be open at Zion on Wednesday, January 5; Thursday, January 6; and Friday, January 7.

The church is located at 51 West Central Avenue, at the corner of Central Avenue and Franklin Street.

The shelter is opened for single men in need of warmth when the low temperature is predicted to hit 20 degrees or less. Guests are welcome between 10 PM and 8 AM the next morning. The church is located at 51 West Central Avenue, at the corner of Central Avenue and Franklin Street.

If you would like to help in this outreach, the church is in need of goodie bags. Simply fill a one gallon freezer bag with non-perishable food items with a long shelf life, as well as any necessary utensils. Please keep the following in mind:

  • Soft foods like squeezable yogurt or beef sticks (not jerky) are great for folks with dental issues.
  • Always check the sell by/best by dates.
  • Items should be tightly sealed. Things like raisins dry out quickly because of their packaging.
  • Please only include edibles. We are well stocked on most other essentials.
  • Leave enough room in the freezer bag to zip comfortably.

Please drop finished goodie bags off to Andrews House, 39 W Winter St. in Delaware (corner of Franklin and Winter). Please call them ahead at (740) 369-4520 before leaving to make sure their staff is available.
