Late Tuesday evening, Delaware County Commissioner Barb Lewis announced on social media that she will not run for reelection when her current term ends next fall. Lewis said she is sharing the decision now to give Republican candidates time to prepare for the May 5, 2026 primary election. The winner of that race will advance to the November 3 general election.

In her post, Lewis wrote that serving as a county commissioner has been “the greatest honor of my life,” noting that she is about to begin her 12th year in the role following seven years as a Genoa Township trustee. She emphasized that the timing of the announcement was intentional, aimed at ensuring a competitive and orderly transition.

Looking back on a long public career

Lewis reflected on her years in public service with gratitude, crediting voters, colleagues, and community partners for the successes achieved during her tenure. She described working alongside dedicated public servants, community leaders, and volunteers as central to her experience, adding that any accomplishments in office were the result of those shared efforts rather than individual action.

Her statement carried the tone of someone closing a long chapter deliberately, not abruptly. Rather than stepping away early, Lewis made clear that she intends to continue working fully through her final year in office.

What comes next

Lewis said she plans to remain active in the community after leaving office, supporting causes and organizations across Delaware County. She also mentioned looking forward to spending more time with her family, including her husband, whom she affectionately referred to as her “biggest fan.”

The announcement opens the door to what could be a competitive Republican primary next spring for one of the county’s most visible offices. By signaling her plans well in advance, Lewis has effectively shifted the focus from her own political future to the next generation of county leadership, while underscoring that her final year in office is still very much unfinished business.
