The Storied History of The Strand Theatre

Established on April 10, 1916, The Strand Theatre has been a cornerstone of Delaware, Ohio, and stands as one of the oldest continuously operating movie theaters in the United States. Located at 28 East Winter Street, near Ohio Wesleyan University, the Strand has seen several transformations over the decades.

Originally a department store built in 1908, the building was converted into a playhouse before becoming a movie theater. Over the years, the Strand has undergone multiple renovations:

  • 1982: Addition of a second screen
  • 1986: Conversion of the original balcony into a third screen
  • 2010: Major renovations including the implementation of digital projectors

The theater’s ownership has changed hands several times, from its original owner Henry Bieberson Jr. to its current status as a non-profit organization operated by the Strand Theatre and Cultural Arts Association. Since 2002, it has been owned by Ohio Wesleyan University, continuing to show first-run movies at affordable prices and host community events.

The Strand blends modern amenities with its historic charm, featuring digital projection capabilities, accessibility features, and three screens for movie showings. Recognized for its renovations and cultural significance, the Strand Theatre remains an important landmark in Delaware, Ohio, bridging its rich history with contemporary cinema offerings and community engagement.
