Delaware County Historical Society Hosts Panel Discussion

As Delaware County continues to evolve, its agricultural roots remain a defining part of the region’s identity. To explore the past, present, and future of farming in the area, the Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS) is hosting a special panel discussion titled “Farming – Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow” on Thursday, February 20, at 7:00 PM at The Barn at Stratford (2690 Stratford Road, Delaware).

For those unable to attend in person, a new live-streaming option is available. Registrants can watch the discussion from their laptop or computer via YouTube for a $5 fee.

The Evolution of Farming in Delaware County

With over 46% of the county’s land dedicated to farming, agriculture remains one of its top industries. However, as urban development accelerates, local farmers face increasing challenges in maintaining their livelihoods while adapting to new technologies, market demands, and sustainability practices.

This panel discussion offers a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from farmers and agricultural experts who have experienced and shaped these changes. DCHS Board President Karen Cowan will moderate the event, guiding discussions on historical farming methods, current industry trends, and the future outlook for local agriculture.

Panelists include:

  • Rob Leeds and Jacci Smith from the Ohio State Extension Service
  • Local farmers Brian Skinner, Doug Dawson, Cameron James, and Mary Fleming

These experts will share their experiences in farming, detailing how technological innovations, economic pressures, and environmental factors have influenced the industry over time. Attendees will also gain insights into how urban expansion and sustainability efforts will impact farming in Delaware County in the years ahead.

Supporting Local Agriculture

The Delaware County Farm Bureau and Willow Brook Christian Communities are sponsoring this important discussion, with additional support from the Charles and Betty J. Sheets family.

This event isn’t just for farmers—it’s an opportunity for all community members to better understand and support the agricultural industry that has long been a cornerstone of Delaware County’s economy and culture.
