Delaware County is making strides to prepare for a mosquito-free spring. In a proactive effort to reduce mosquito breeding grounds, a free Tire Disposal Event has been announced for county residents, providing an eco-friendly solution to dispose of old, water-retaining tires. Scheduled for Saturday, November 23, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, this one-day event will take place at two convenient locations: Radnor Township and the City of Sunbury.
Tackling Mosquito Breeding Sites Through Tire Disposal
Tires left outdoors can easily collect rainwater, creating a prime habitat for mosquitoes to breed and proliferate. By eliminating these potential breeding sites, Delaware County aims to protect public health and reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, which pose a risk in warmer months. According to health officials, events like these not only help residents dispose of cumbersome items but also contribute significantly to local health and environmental efforts.
“Our goal is to empower residents to make a positive impact on their environment,” a representative from the Delaware Public Health District stated. “By providing a convenient way to dispose of old tires, we’re not only helping residents declutter but also actively reducing potential mosquito habitats.”
Event Locations and Guidelines
The tire disposal event is open to all Delaware County residents. However, there are a few guidelines and restrictions to keep the process smooth and accessible:
- Date and Time: Saturday, November 23, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
- Locations:
- Radnor Township: 4230 State Route 203, Radnor, OH
- City of Sunbury: 250 Otis Street, Sunbury, OH
- Limitations: Each household can dispose of up to 10 passenger tires.
- Preference: Tires off the rim are preferred, although on-rim tires will still be accepted.
- Eligibility: This service is reserved for individual residents only—no businesses are permitted to participate.
The event is designed with accessibility in mind, with two well-chosen locations to ensure residents from various parts of the county can participate with ease.
Why Tire Disposal Matters for Delaware County
Old tires pose more than just an eyesore; they can become environmental hazards, especially when left unattended. Besides collecting water that attracts mosquitoes, discarded tires can degrade over time, releasing chemicals and creating blight in communities. By hosting this disposal event, Delaware County agencies are tackling both an environmental and health issue.
This initiative is a collaborative effort led by several local organizations, including Delaware Public Health District, Keep Delaware County Beautiful, DKMM Solid Waste District, and Ohio EPA. These partners have consistently supported community health and cleanliness through various programs aimed at sustainable practices and public health improvements.
Looking Ahead: Keeping Delaware County Mosquito-Free
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this free event to prepare for a healthier spring season. Keeping properties free from potential mosquito breeding sites helps protect neighborhoods and families from the nuisance and health risks associated with mosquito populations. Additionally, the county hopes to raise awareness about the impact of proper waste disposal on community well-being.
For Delaware County, events like this are essential steps in fostering a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone. By removing old tires before spring arrives, residents are actively participating in a community-wide effort to combat mosquito-borne health risks. With the support of local health and environmental agencies, Delaware County is well on its way to a cleaner, safer future.
