Since the early 1990s, Delaware and Baumholder, Germany (pictured above), have enjoyed a rich and friendly relationship, beginning with Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) soccer tournaments in Baumholder. This enduring bond led to the official Sister City designation in 2011.

Last week, Delaware hosted a delegation from Baumholder in a visit honoring OWU’s retiring soccer coach, Jay Martin, a figure central to this unique relationship. The week-long itinerary included tours, celebrations, and memorable moments, with Delaware community members, including host families, extending their hospitality to their German visitors.

Welcoming Baumholder to Ohio: Events and Activities

The delegation from Baumholder had a packed schedule that offered them a taste of central Ohio’s highlights:

  • Statehouse Tour: A tour of the Ohio Statehouse allowed Baumholder guests to learn about Ohio’s political history and government workings.
  • Exploring Ohio Wesleyan University: The Baumholder delegation toured OWU’s campus, where they enjoyed both the grounds and the school’s history.
  • Columbus Zoo Visit: Renowned for its extensive exhibits, the Columbus Zoo was a favorite stop, showcasing Ohio’s diverse wildlife.
  • Soccer Celebration: A tailgate party and OWU soccer game brought the two communities together, celebrating Coach Jay Martin’s legacy and the sport that initially sparked the Sister City connection.

The Small and Storied Town of Baumholder

Baumholder, located in Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate region, holds both historical charm and a vital military presence. Nestled within the Hunsrück mountains, the town lies approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Kaiserslautern and 100 kilometers from Frankfurt. With its scenic rolling hills and forests, Baumholder has attracted military families and nature enthusiasts alike. Its population may be modest, with around 4,000 residents, yet the town is bustling, with an infrastructure supporting the nearby Baumholder Military Community (BMC), including schools, recreational spaces, and shops serving U.S. military personnel and their families.

Host Families and the Power of Community

The success of this Delaware-Baumholder exchange could not be achieved without the support of Delaware’s host families, who opened their homes and hearts to the delegation. By hosting guests, Delaware residents enriched the cultural exchange, providing a personal connection and making the delegation’s visit unforgettable. From providing meals to guiding visitors through Ohio’s offerings, these families played an essential role in renewing friendships and ensuring the relationship’s longevity.
