It’s Ohio’s newest roller coaster, and it calls Delaware County home.

It’s called “Tidal Twist,” and it’s a 36 foot tall spinning roller coming to Adventure Cove at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. It was designed by the coaster manufacturer Zamperla, and is on of that firm’s family of twisting coasters installed nationwide.

This will be the first of its kind in Ohio.

The coaster has the unique feature in that at the midpoint of each ride, the cars “unlock,” as it were, and spin freely throughout the remainder of the experience. Think of it as a Tilt-a-Whirl meets coaster.

Oh – and all at speeds approaching 30 miles per hour.

With the current Sea Dragon ride, this makes the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium the only zoo in the entire United States to feature two roller coasters! Required ride height is 48” if riding alone or 42” with an adult.

The Zoo has said goodbye to the venerable Redwood Falls Log Flume.

There are a couple places online where it is suggested that the new ride may be similar to the one featured in the video below, also built by Zamperla.

This new roller coaster will have a family-friendly height requirement of 42” if riding with an adult and 48” if riding alone. Joining the Columbus Zoo’s classic Sea Dragon wooden roller coaster, this new addition will make the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium the only zoo in the United States to feature two roller coasters.

The Tidal Twist roller coaster opens to the public on Monday, June 28.

This past weekend, the Zoo dropped photos of the installed coaster on Twitter and Instagram this week (see below).
