There is something quietly powerful about a classroom filled not with grades and deadlines, but with curiosity.
This spring, the Lifelong Learning Institute at Ohio Wesleyan University is once again inviting Delaware County residents 55 and older to pull up a chair, open a notebook, and lean into learning simply for the joy of it. Registration is now underway for the spring session, which begins the week of March 16. For a flat fee of $75, participants may take as many courses as they wish during the session. There are no tests. No transcripts. No competition. Just conversation, exploration, and the pleasure of engaging ideas in good company.
A Catalog That Spans the Globe
The spring lineup reads less like a syllabus and more like an invitation to wander. Film lovers can dive into Oscar Potpourri. History buffs may gravitate toward Embracing the Past to Understand the Present: Three Defining “Moments” in Ohio and American History. Those with global interests can explore Introduction to South Korea: History, Politics, and the Economy or take a Virtual (Silk) Road Trip across the history of the Islamic world and its architecture.
The LLI Potpourri series offers single-session topics that reflect today’s most pressing conversations and enduring questions, including:
- What to Do About Immigration?
- It’s Common Sense to Declare Independence
- New Advances in Alzheimer’s Treatment and Building Brain-Healthy Habits
- Can You Play Your Way to a Sharper Brain?
Science, religion, politics, travel, and even TV Game Show Fun – Part 2 all find a place in the schedule. And for nature enthusiasts, AMAZING BIRDS VIII promises another round of global avian exploration. The fact that this is the eighth installment tells you something. These courses build communities as much as they build knowledge.
Learning Without the Pressure
Courses are taught by Ohio Wesleyan professors and volunteer experts in what organizers describe as a non-competitive environment. That matters. Many participants bring deep professional and personal experience to the table. What emerges is less lecture hall and more thoughtful exchange.
All sessions will be held in person unless otherwise noted, reinforcing the social dimension that so many retirees and near-retirees value. Learning here is as much about connection as content.
The Practical Details
Registration opened February 6 and runs through March 6. Scholarship applications are due March 7, helping ensure that cost does not become a barrier. Confirmation of course registration will be sent to each paid registrant.

In a county that continues to grow and diversify, programs like this anchor something essential. They affirm that intellectual life does not taper off at retirement. If anything, it deepens. Lifelong learning is not a slogan here. It is a practice. And this spring, it is open to anyone ready to sit down, listen closely, and ask the next good question.
