The Department of Music at Ohio Wesleyan University is not only home to many fine musical ensembles that present concerts throughout the academic year, it also hosts budding musicians who come together to learn from talented instructors and directors.

Such will be the case later this month, when OWU hosts the OWU Middle School Honor Band Festival. Nearly 175 middle school students from across the state will practice and then perform in Gray Chapel inside University Hall.

Membership in the Honor Band is competitive, with students chosen based on musicianship and attitude. Because of the large numbers of students selected, they will perform as two bands. Conductors will include Mary Kate McNally, OWU Marching Band director; Richard Edwards, associate professor of music; and Yuji Jones, band director for Marion City Schools’ Grant Middle and Harding High schools.

Songs scheduled to be performed include “Sunchaser” by Carol Brittin Chambers, “Woven” by 2007 OWU alumna Nicole Piunno, “Ancient Flower” by Yukiko Nishimura, and “The Devil’s Workshop” by Kimberly Archer.

Taking place at 7 PM on January 18, admission is free to this concert, which will also be streamed live at www.owu.edu/stream. Learn more at www.owu.edu/music.

Just for fun,  listen to a little bit of a summer concert earlier this from the outside of Gray Chapel.
