Improving Visibility and Safety for Pedestrians

The City of Powell is taking significant steps to enhance pedestrian safety by implementing new crosswalk improvements throughout the city. One of the most impactful additions is the installation of flashing beacons at pedestrian crosswalks. These beacons, when activated, increase visibility for pedestrians and alert drivers to their presence. Additionally, the city has introduced 20MPH flashing school zone signs, reminding motorists to slow down during critical school start and release times. These are the first flashing school zone signs ever installed in Powell, marking a moment in the city’s commitment to pedestrian safety.

Completed Upgrades: Key Areas Seeing Improvements

Several locations in Powell have already benefited from these upgrades. Notable improvements include:

  • New flashing beacons installed at the Seldom Seen Road bike path crossing near the railroad
  • An upgraded pedestrian crossing with flashing beacons at Steitz Road and Harold Drive
  • The installation of new school zone flashers at S. Liberty Street and Salisbury Drive

These upgrades are expected to make high-traffic pedestrian areas much safer, especially for schoolchildren and cyclists navigating these routes.

More Improvements Coming Soon

While several crosswalk projects have been completed, Powell continues to prioritize pedestrian-friendly infrastructure with additional upgrades set to take place later this year. Upcoming projects include:

  • Upgraded crossing with new flashing beacons at S. Liberty Street
  • Installation of flashing beacons at Hall Street, Depot Street, and Traditions Way, funded through the Ohio Department of Transportation’s HSIP Abbreviated Safety Funding Program

With these initiatives, Powell aims to foster a safer, more walkable community. The city encourages residents to take advantage of these new safety measures and remain vigilant while traveling on foot or by bike.
