The Delaware Area Career Center has been named a Purple Star School by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, an honor that recognizes schools making a strong and visible commitment to military-connected students and their families.

The designation is awarded to schools that meet a series of specific requirements aimed at helping students from military families feel supported and included. To qualify, schools must identify a military family liaison, complete staff professional development on the needs of military-connected students, maintain a dedicated web page with resources for military families, and carry out at least one additional activity designed to serve those students.

For DACC, the recognition reflects an approach that goes beyond checking boxes. It signals that the school is paying attention to the realities many military families face, including frequent moves, interrupted school experiences, and the uncertainty that can come with deployment. The Purple Star designation tells those families that they are entering a school community that understands those challenges and is prepared to help.

In a statement recognizing the achievement, the Ohio School Boards Association said, “As the leading voice for public education in the state of Ohio, OSBA is pleased to acknowledge this achievement and celebrate your continued dedication to serving all students.”

The Meaning of Designation

Military-connected students often have to adapt quickly to new schools, new classmates, and new routines. That kind of transition can be difficult under any circumstances. When a school makes support systems visible and intentional, it can make a real difference in how quickly students and families feel at home.

At DACC, the Purple Star designation reinforces a broader message about belonging. The district says the honor reflects a long-standing commitment to making sure every student, regardless of background or circumstance, feels welcomed, valued, and fully supported throughout the educational experience.

Part Of A Growing Statewide Effort

The Purple Star designation is valid for three years. After that, schools must apply again and demonstrate that their commitment to military-connected students is continuing and growing.

DACC now joins a growing number of Ohio schools that have earned the recognition for building smoother, more supportive transitions for military families entering their communities.

About The Award

The Purple Star Award is administered by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce with support from the Ohio Purple Star Advisory Board. Schools seeking the designation must meet state criteria and reapply every three years for renewal.
